You can buy cars at any auction open to the public without having to have a dealer’s license. If you’re interested in buying salvage title cars you need a license though. But buying those types of cars are not a good idea unless you plan on using them for parts. You’re better off going to a public auction and just bringing a mechanic along to give the car(s) a good inspection.

damonbradshaw11, I’m not the smartest person when it comes to auto repair. Last year I had some problems with my Nissan Titan and I wasn’t sure how to fix them. I tried to search the Internet for tips, but the procedures were too complex for my skills. I ended up going to the dealship for my repairs. The dealership tends to charge more than mom and pop repair shops, but they’ve seen all sorts of situations (auto insurance problems, repair warranty issues, etc) and they seem to always find a way to help me. Maybe you can try calling auto repair shops in Illinois to see if they can help you.
